Growing Mediums are used in hydroponic gardening instead of soil. Good hydroponic growing mediums will be sterile, retain moisture, provide support for the plants, be inert (won’t break down), be of neutral pH and contain nothing that can be taken up by the plants. There are various types available, each with it’s own characteristics. Some plants may be more suited to one medium than another.
Cocotek Cubes come ready to use with perforated holes designed to fit rooting plugs like our the Rapid Rooter. Cocotek cubes come wrapped in plastic to keep out light and algae while holding moisture in. Jumbo-sized for continuously feeding larger plants.
Grodan Rockwool is made from molten rock spun into cotton candy-like fibers and then compressed in to cubes, blocks, or slabs. These convient cubes are recommended for starting seedlings and cuttings. They fit into common propagation trays and may be transferred as needed to blocks or traditional planters.
Hydroton clay pebbles (or ''rocks'') are made from pH neutral clay. Their air to moisture ratio makes them ideal for hydroponics. They can be used to fill plastic net cups in aeroponic and NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) systems, as a medium for drip irrigation systems, or as a medium for container gardening. Hydroton is an expanded clay medium manufactured in Germany and is well suited for growing larger plants like tomatoes and peppers. It holds water extremely well and offers good capillary action. It is reusable, clean, and odorless. Perfect for passive, wick, and subirrigation use, individual hydroculture pots or hydroponic systems. Reuse over and over by rinsing out roots then sterilizing in a very mild bleach solution (about 1/2 cup per gallon of water). Rinse well before using.
